Transformation of landmark building
Architetural design and interior
The Chimney Guest House, a former water pumping station designated as a landmark, serves as a prime example of holistic renovation that seamlessly blends historical integrity with modern design. The renovation process honors the building’s original material palette, ensuring that its historical significance is preserved, while also featuring a contemporary upper-level extension that complements the existing architecture. This thoughtful approach not only respects the heritage of the site but also enhances its functionality and aesthetic appeal, illustrating how historical structures can be revitalized for contemporary use.
The Chimney House is a fascinating mix of its historic past and a thoughtful material palette, allowing me to transform it into a modern home and guesthouse where the materials connect the two.

The dramatic steel staircase, bespoke furnishings, and custom terrazzo flooring reflect a seamless dialogue between interior and exterior, enhancing the guesthouse experience. Notable features include the restoration of the distinctive 35-meter chimney and the creation of light-filled, modern spaces with generous heights and expansive glass doors that echo the original arched windows.
Attention to materiality, such as using warm grey render to honor the building’s brick, ensures a timeless aesthetic that doesn’t compromise liveability. The design evokes a refined blend of contemporary elegance and functionality, showcasing VIPP’s premium kitchen and bathroom elements.
