The Midfjordur Lodge, an architectural design project for salmon fishing enthusiasts in northwest Iceland, exemplifies luxury travel in the Arctic with its sleek, contemporary design that melds seamlessly into the breathtaking landscape. Crafted from local materials and featuring large windows for panoramic views, the lodge offers a tranquil escape where guests can experience the thrill of salmon fishing while enjoying high-end accommodations and personalized services. With capacity for eight to ten guests, complete with expert fishing guides and gourmet dining, the lodge provides an exceptional blend of adventure and comfort, making it a premier destination for those seeking an unforgettable experience in the wild Arctic.

I wanted to create a lodge that carried nature inside, and at the same time, creates views into the landscape of Iceland.

With two symmetrical wings enveloping dual courtyards, the design fosters a unique connection between the interior and the breathtaking landscape, inviting lodgers to immerse themselves in nature. A central passage cuts through the lodge, framing panoramic views and emphasizing the relationship between the structure and Midfjordur’s vibrant environment.

The sloping roof extends horizontally, enhancing the façade’s light-reflective materiality, while the interior palette mirrors the rich colors of the local terrain, ensuring an honest dialogue with the landscape. This project is more than a lodge; it embodies a legacy of architecture that respects its setting, offering a shared space for writers, scientists, and researchers.

By harmonizing the building’s form and function with its ecological context, the Midfjordur lodge serves as an enduring example of how thoughtful design can evoke a profound sense of place, inviting guests to experience the essence of Iceland’s enchanting wilderness.
