Islands Brygge House

Architectural design and interior design
2014
Set within Copenhagen’s former harbour district, Islands Brygge House transforms the site of an existing garage into a private residence and studio for photographer Peter Krasilnikoff. One of David Thulstrup’s early architectural works, the renovation keeps the original brick boundary walls and builds a new home around raw brick, blackened steel, concrete, timber and light.

The narrow site made daylight the central challenge. A glass atrium was placed through the centre of the house, drawing light through all three floors and organising daily life around an internal garden. It gives the house air, greenery and a clear centre within the industrial frame.

The ground floor is direct and robust, with poured concrete, brick, blackened steel, terrazzo and deep coloured textiles. Higher in the house, oak floors and walls create a softer setting for private rooms. At the top, a glass roof room opens towards a planted terrace, while the timber facade is made to weather slowly over time.
