Vipp Chimney Guesthouse
Copenhagen, Denmark
Transformation and interior architecture
2018
Vipp Chimney Guesthouse is set inside a heritage listed water pumping station from 1902 in Copenhagen. Created for Vipp as part of its guesthouse concept, the renovation keeps the character of the original brick structure while introducing a new upper level, terrace, staircase and complete interior.

"The Chimney House is a fascinating mix of its historic past and a thoughtful material palette, allowing me to transform it into a modern home and guesthouse where the materials connect the two."
David Thulstrup

The house takes its name from the 35 metre chimney, which was restored as part of the work. Inside, new elements are kept slightly apart from the old walls, allowing the existing structure and the contemporary additions to be read clearly. A steel upper level follows the gabled roofline, while a U shaped staircase in blackened steel and extruded aluminium divides the ground floor into living and dining areas.
